Additionally we have a selection of useful information available to help with selecting the right underfloor heating on our Guides page.

Is it expensive to install underfloor heating?

The cost will depend on the project and time taken to install. An small empty square room will of course be cheaper than a more complex shaped room which will take longer to install. Also if there is clear access to install into multiple rooms in a single visit then this will also be cheaper than a project requiring multiple visits. To get more of an accurate price then would be happy to put you in contact with a team of recommended installers who will be able to discuss your project with you in more detail.

Is there a maximum thickness of floor covering to consider?

It is dependent of the thermal conductivity of the floor finish. Obviously the better the thermal conductivity the more flexibility there is with the thickness as there will be a good level of heat transfer through the material. Stone and ceramics tiles have a good heat transfer. With engineered woods we recommend no thicker than 22mm and for carpets and underlays, a combined tog value of 2.5T. To establish the tog value of the carpet and underlay speak to your carpet supplier.

What about below the underfloor heating, do I need insulation?

As well as considering what floor covering is used it is equally important to ensure that the floor below is well insulated so as to prevent heat loss through the floor. Poor insulation of the subfloor will result in an inefficient and in-economical heating system.

What reassurances do I have that the underfloor heating won’t leak?

London Underfloor Heating Suppliers is dedicated to offering customers only the highest quality of underfloor heating components from top brands that have been manufactured to rigorous European Standards. Henco PE-Xc/Al/PE-Xc is a multilayer pipe comprising of 5 bonded layers which comes with a 50 year manufacturers warranty to give customers peace of mind that the system being installed is of the highest quality. As the underfloor heating pipe is always installed as a single continuous run then there is absolutely no reason that the pipes will leak.

What type of floor construction is required for underfloor heating?

There isn’t a specific floor construction required for the installation of underfloor heating into your project. There are in fact various options depending on the type of building construction and level of build/renovation works being undertaken. For example underfloor heating can be installed within a solid sand & cement or liquid screed application or alternatively within a timber floor construction. Either way we will incorporate your requirements into consideration when designing the system for you and advise you on the options available.

What type of floor coverings can I use over underfloor heating?

Most floor coverings can be used over underfloor heating but it should be noted that the choice of floor covering does have an effect on the underfloor heating design and so this will need to be considered from the start so that the system is designed, installed and commissioned correctly. Floor coverings such as floor tiles have a low thermal resistance and so work well with underfloor heating whereas heavy, deep-pile carpets are not the best choice.

Why should I install underfloor heating and not traditional radiators?

Underfloor heating is a far more efficient and effective way to provide heating as it uses lower water temperatures within the system to achieve the same desired room temperature. By using lower flow temperatures less energy is required on the primary heating source such as the boiler. It is also a far more healthier form of heating as warmth is radiated through the floor surface rather than warming and drying the air within the room.
